The literary Chu family is a one-of-a-kind family of writers in contemporary Chinese literature circles. The family produced seven writers within three generations, all of whom have written profoundly influential masterpieces. Unfulfilled Dreams is directed by CHU Tien-wen and tells her parents’ story from the daughters’ perspective. The sisters found a diary of their father’s journey to Taiwan. They also found their mother’s writings about her life growing up among doctors in a small town in Miaoli, as well as 120 “non-love love letters” exchanged between their parents. It is a priceless record of the journey taken by a family of writers faced with the evolving history of Taiwan.
