The Hakka people use the phrase “not having enough salt” to describe a physically weak person. In traditional Hakka culture, salt is considered a source of energy. In the early days, people engaged in heavy labor, and to gain power quickly, they needed to consume more salt. Over time, salt has become a symbol of a person’s strength and courage in Hakka culture. The film’s central theme is “the practice of magic.” It cleverly depicts the process of making preserved radish, Suan-cai, Fu-cai, dried pickled mustard greens, and pickled pork in an attempt to showcase Hakka pickling culture.
