FACES OF A TAIWANESE OPERA ACTRESS

This series documents the challenges a Taiwanese opera troupe faces as a new generation assumes leadership, showcasing the beauty of the unique opera style in Taiwan.

Taiwanese opera actress CHANG Meng-i faced a pivotal turning point in her life in 2018: her mentor, National Living Treasure of Taiwanese Opera actress LIAO Chiung-chih, appointed her as the head of the “Shintrun Taiwanese Opera Troupe.” While portraying various characters on stage, Meng-i plays different roles in her daily life: troupe leader, actress, teacher, wife, and mother. In addition to the highlights of the troupe’s performances, the film features four original Taiwanese Opera songs specially composed to convey Meng-i’s state of mind in the face of significant transitions in her life. Meng-i’s story tells of the various challenges a woman must juggle at work and home and how she finds self-affirmation through these obstacles.
