Abandoned by her Vietnamese mother, Ru is raised by her grandmother, who runs a funeral marching band. She falls in love with Nickel, a volatile boy working for a local gangster. With no future in their rural town, Ru joins a blackmail scheme that backfires, drawing the attention of Xiang, the son of a powerful politician, and she is assaulted. Pregnant, Ru flees to Vietnam with Nickel after he kills a corrupt police officer, only to encounter Xiang again. Returning home in search of a new beginning, Ru finds Xiang rising unscathed, his campaign billboards towering over the town. Small beneath their shadow, she realizes survival alone is not enough, and quietly resolves to fight back against a world determined to crush her.
