During Taiwan’s gambling boom in the 1980s, teenage A-Ru believes she can control fate after winning a fortune with numbers revealed in a dream. Years later, after her mother, mother-in-law, and husband die under mysterious circumstances, she becomes one of Taiwan’s few women sentenced to death.

More than a decade later, journalist Hsiao-Ching visits A-Ru in prison, only to find herself trapped between contradictory memories, shifting confessions, and unreliable testimonies. As she retraces A-Ru’s past, the investigation reveals that the real mystery is not simply whether A-Ru killed, but how trauma, memory, media, and public judgment construct the story of a woman already condemned—and whether she can still be understood.
