In the suffocating heat of summer, CHOU, a writer who has not written for years, is looking for a tenant to share a spare room in his house. One day, Chiang, a young man who claimed to be an actor, came to rent the room. CHOU finds out that the daily life of Chiang is a performance in itself, and he enjoys being a loyal audience to this fake persona.The drama “Seagull” starring Chiang is about to be staged. However, he is dropped by the team suddenly due to his inability to act. Being frustrated to lose his role, Chiang discovers that CHOU is writing the protagonist of his latest novel in accordance to him. Both of them are now confused by the illusion and desire in different roles, pushing them to the same ending.

久未寫作的作家周迅生，正為他多出來的空房間尋找租客。一天，一名自稱演員的男子何一唱前來租房，他清澈卻稚氣的眼神引起了迅生的興趣。擅長「觀察」的迅生，開始以唱作為他寫作藍本。他發現唱的生活本身就是一場表演，一個活在虛假中的人設，讓迅生樂於成為唱最忠實的觀眾。

唱的舞台劇《海鷗》即將上演，然而，本來身為主角的他，卻被導演認為無法繼續適任。唱沮喪於失去角色的同時，發現自己竟成了迅生小說中的主角。渴望被注視的演員與只能在書中描述內心的作家，混淆在不同角色間的困惑與慾望，讓迅生和唱走向一個彼此依存的結局。
