MAGICIAN OF TASTE

Salt are fairies, which protect people in the early days.

Hakka people use “not having enough salt” to describe a physically weak person. In traditional Hakka culture, salt is the source of energy. In the early days, people engaged in heavy labor; to quickly gain energy, they needed to eat more salt. With time passing, salt has become a symbol of a person’s strength and courage in Hakka culture.

The film uses “the practice of magic” as the main theme and cleverly depicts the process of making preserved radish, Suan-cai, Fu-cai, dried pickled mustard green, and pickled pork, in an attempt to show the Hakka pickling culture.
