Driven and assertive, HE Wei-wei is on the verge of graduating from obstetrics and gynecological (O&G) training at one of America’s top schools. Her sole objective is to serve the affluent for a comfortable life. However, when her emotionally distant father unexpectedly passes away, she is compelled to inherit his life’s work: a small-town O&G clinic in rural Taiwan.
Assuming Taiwan, a society she thinks is progressive given the legalization of same-sex marriage, Wei-wei is shocked by the challenges her patients face. One is forced to continue her pregnancy despite the danger of worsening her newly-diagnosed cancer. Another, a young woman, only comes for prenatal checks after countless overtime hours at work. Her first friend is a factory girl married to a local nouveau riche, caught in the desperate desire of her mother-in-law and husband for sons.
Wei-wei exclaims – are Taiwanese women genuinely living in the 21st century? No wonder the birth rate remains painfully low!
