Pedro OLIVA from Brazil, the holder of the world record for whitewater adventure kayaking, has taken on challenging whitewater adventures across five continents, conquering extreme terrains like volcanoes and Antarctic glaciers. Intrigued by Taiwan’s unique geographical features and high whitewater challenges, Pedro explored the country. During his visit, he met professional kayakers who dream of tackling over one hundred rapids in Taiwan. Members of the ‘Release Waters Alliance aim to promote canoeing, investigate ancient water routes, and challenge unreasonable waterway restrictions across various regions. Their goal is to revive Taiwan’s inherent oceanic spirit.
Among them are the Amis of the Kiwit tribe, who have built niche rafting activities to preserve their traditional fishing and hunting culture rather than opting for mass commercialized tourism. Another individual, Mr. Cat, transitioned from running a cultural salon restaurant to starting a new life by the fishing port. Engaging in water activities and selling seafood, he unexpectedly became a guardian of the ocean, caring for migrant fishermen and participating in beach cleanups. This unforgettable journey showcases not only the captivating waterscapes but also the diverse spirit of the kayakers depicted by these main characters.
