The bond between a childlike adult and a child is Asia’s proven box-office territory — Miracle in Cell No. 7, Marathon — and UNCLE brings it home to millennium-era Taiwan, anchored by a transformative lead role built to attract major cast and awards attention.

In 1990s rural Taiwan, a gifted boy’s bond with his intellectually disabled uncle is tested by adolescence, societal shame, and a rapidly progressing world, revealing beauty in those left behind.
