Most people think of the Hakka as farmers in the mountains, but in the past, the Hakka in Xinwu also “farmed the sea.” During the off-season, they would go to the coast to fish using a traditional method called “Qian Gu.” This film interviews experienced elders and local historians from the coastal areas of Xinwu, Taoyuan. The main subject, 82-year-old Mr. HUANG A-li, is one of the few elders who can share detailed memories of the “Qian Gu” fishing culture from before World War II. Through their stories, the film reveals the unique history of the Hakka people also being involved in fishing.
