In 1877, Qing troops invaded the Amis communities in the Cepo’ region. Amid the chaos of war, Kacaw witnessed the siblings Sawmah and Nakaw lose their loved ones, while the Amis people were forced to abandon their homeland. Their chief, Mayaw, led them over mountains and valleys in a desperate flight northward to Cilangasan. Struggling with hunger and cold, Kacaw felt deep guilt toward the orphaned siblings while also worrying about Usay and her unborn child. Hoping to find a way out, he tried to persuade Mayaw to accept the Qing soldiers’ promises. Torn with doubt, Mayaw faced despair: their home was gone, and their food supplies had run out. With no other choice, he placed his trust in the Qing troops and went down the mountain to collect rice. Would the Qing soldiers keep their word and allow the Amis people to return to their homeland? Or were they hiding darker intentions?
