In 1896, a young Truku boy named Umin witnessed Japanese soldiers assaulting a woman in Xincheng, igniting his people’s resistance against Japan. Haunted by guilt and by the memory of his brother’s death, he carried the weight of silence. By 1913, now a husband and father, Umin encountered a Japanese expedition team in the mountains. Determined not to remain passive, he faced a storm of choices shaped by his chief’s caution, his brother’s words, and the uncertain fate of his people. Through Umin’s struggle, the story reflects the Truku people’s 18-year fight against Japan—the largest war fought on Taiwan’s main island in the 20th century.
